Whipped Ricotta & Calabrian Chili Toast w/ A Drizzle Of Honey

Whipped Ricotta & Calabrian Chili Toast with Arugula + a drizzle of honey

When we visited Italy this past summer, I was introduced to a few new dishes, ingredients, and recipes that felt fresh, delicious, and uniquely fun to make. One of those ingredients was Calabrian chilis—they have a warm, vibrant heat that pairs beautifully with the buttery richness of olive oil. I loved the idea of using them in a new way.

You’ll usually find Calabrian chilis in spicy tomato-based pasta sauces, but I wanted to create something different. So instead, I added them to a creamy, Italian-inspired ricotta spread and layered it on warm piece of toast with fresh arugula and crunchy pumpkin seeds. A light drizzle of honey and extra-virgin olive oil adds just the right amount of sweetness and warmth. This toast has a little heat, a little creaminess, a little crunch, and just enough natural sweetness to make each bite flavorful, filling, refreshing, and satisfying.

This recipe was inspired by our time in Italy, and I hope it takes your taste buds on a little culinary detour too. I tried to use traditional Italian ingredients—ricotta, oregano, olive oil, arugula, artisan bread, and of course crushed Calabrian chili peppers—to create a “bruschetta-style” experience on a larger, heartier scale. But I also mixed things up with a drizzle of honey and the sea-salted crunch of pumpkin seeds, which add such a fun, textural twist.

And as a bonus, this recipe is totally customizable. It’s one of those easy, playful toast concepts where you can adjust everything—the sauce, arugula, pumpkin seeds, honey, and olive oil—to match exactly what you want in each bite. Let your eyes and appetite guide you. Best of all, it comes together in about 20 minutes, is nourishing, and makes the perfect filling snack or light meal. I really hope you love it.

Highlight Ingredients That Make The Best Toast

Organic Baby Arugula - This adds the perfect freshness, pepperiness, and earthiness. For the healthiest version, I love using organic baby arugula.

Organic Pumpkin Seeds with Sea Salt - These nutrient-packed seeds bring crunch, saltiness, and texture. I prefer organic pumpkin seeds to avoid GMOs and ensure they’re as natural and mineral-rich as possible—say yes to magnesium and copper!

Crushed Calabrian Chili Peppers - A little goes a long way, which is why this recipe only calls for ½ tablespoon. It gives you all the heat you need without overpowering the toast. They can be a bit tricky to find since most are imported from Italy, but specialty grocery stores and Amazon typically carry them.

Whole Milk Ricotta Cheese - Ricotta is the base of the whipped chili spread. It adds creaminess, tanginess, and a smooth, spreadable texture. I usually opt for lighter dairy, but whole-milk ricotta works perfectly here—it creates a richer, thicker spread that’s easier to eat. Plus, the whole recipe stays balanced thanks to the fresh arugula, nutritious pumpkin seeds, healthy fats from olive oil, and the natural sweetness of honey.

Honey - A drizzle of honey perfectly balances the heat from the chili-ricotta spread. I’m not picky about which honey I use —anything natural works. I often use the Target Good & Gather brand because it has great caramelized flavor and drizzles beautifully.

Artisan Homemade French Bread (Get Recipe) - Any bread will work, but I love using my homemade French bread. I bake it, freeze it in a freezer-safe bag, then thaw it for 45 seconds on each side (1 minute 30 seconds total) before slicing and toasting. It’s more natural, soft, doughy, and toasts perfectly.

  • Pumpkin seeds with sea salt

  • Salt and pepper

How To Make This Italian-Style Toast

1. Preheat the Oven

Start by preheating your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with foil to make cleanup easy later on.

2. Make the Whipped Ricotta Calabrian Chili Spread

In a blender, add all of the spread ingredients:

  • Ricotta cheese

  • Crushed Calabrian chili peppers

  • Olive oil

  • Lemon juice

  • Dried oregano

Blend everything together until the mixture becomes smooth, creamy, and fully whipped — this should take about one minute.

Once blended, season with salt and pepper to taste. Put in a bowl and set the whipped ricotta aside while you prepare the toast.

3. Slice and Toast the Bread

Take your artisan bread loaf and slice it into 2–3-inch thick pieces. Lay each slice evenly on your prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops of the bread lightly with olive oil so they crisp up beautifully.

Bake for 5–10 minutes, or until the edges of the bread start turning a warm golden brown. (Every oven is a little different, so keep an eye on them!)

4. Prep Your Toppings

While the toast is in the oven, gather all your toppings so you’re ready to assemble while the bread is still warm. This makes assembly quick and easy once the toast comes out of the oven.

Set out:

  • Arugula

  • Pumpkin seeds

  • Olive oil

  • Honey

  • Your whipped ricotta Calabrian chili spread

5. Assemble the Toast

When the bread is golden, remove it from the oven and let it cool for about one minute. Take one slice and spread a generous spoonful of the whipped ricotta chili mixture all the way across the top. Add a handful of fresh arugula, followed by a sprinkle of sea-salted pumpkin seeds for crunch. Finish with a light drizzle of olive oil and honey — adjust the amount to your taste or mood.

6. Serve and Enjoy

Serve the toast warm and enjoy this Italian-inspired, fresh, flavorful bite. It’s simple, delicious, and packed with texture and natural goodness.
