Gooey Chocolate Avocado Brownies (Healthier & Gluten-Free)

Gooey Chocolate Avocado Brownies Plated and Ready to Serve

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, or really any time of the year, you want a dessert that’s decadent, delicious, and a little gooey. But what if you could have all of that with a healthier twist—no one will even know it’s missing refined flour, excess sugar, highly processed oils, or the high-saturated fat butter that usually added to regular brownies. These gooey chocolate brownies are still fudgy, chocolaty, satisfying, rich, and pair perfectly with just about any ice cream, fruit, sauce, spread—you name it. You’re welcome.

These brownies are heart-healthy and gluten-free, made with wholesome ingredients like avocado, extra virgin olive oil, agave syrup, oat and almond flours, eggs, and sea salt. They combine two types of cocoa powder to create a spectrum of rich, deep chocolate flavor. With a lower amount of brown sugar balanced by the natural amber flavor of agave syrup, these brownies are a step above the traditional ones. Plus, they don’t use any regular flour—only plant-based flours that add nuttiness, extra vitamins, and minerals. The lower-saturated-fat chocolate chips (semi-sweet mini chips) bring a deeper, darker element to the flavor—decadent, rich, and never sickeningly sweet.

When I created this recipe, I wanted to make something special for Valentine’s season because honestly, there’s nothing better than sharing a delicious dessert with the people you love. And this one loves you back! It’s heart-healthy, and you won’t even know it. These brownies are perfect with frozen yogurt, ice cream, fresh berries, a dollop of Greek yogurt, jams and jellies, or any sauce of your choice. Whether you're serving them after a romantic dinner, a family meal, or just a casual snack, they’re guaranteed to be a hit. Enjoy!

Health Benefits of These Wonderfull Brownies

  • Healthy Fats: The avocado and extra virgin olive oil work together to create moist, tender brownies with a perfectly gooey, cake-like texture. And unlike other fats, they work to benefit the body in healthy way, making for a delicious dessert that’s actually good for your heart.

  • Lower Refined Sugar + Natural Sweeteners: By cutting down the sugar and swapping it for the natural sweetness of agave syrup, these brownies are just the right amount of sweet—without the refined sugars that can damage arteries and increase your risk for heart disease. Balance is key!

  • Extra Vitamins & Minerals: Plant-based flours bring added nutrients—oat flour is rich in iron, which supports healthy cells and boosts immunity, while almond flour adds vitamin E to support your immune system, promote collagen production for healthy skin, and even boost metabolism. Avocados and olive oil are packed with antioxidants to fight free radicals, helping lower your risk of cancer.

Recipe Ingredient Swaps & Variations

  • The Flour: You can swap the flour for any plant-based alternative, but I wouldn’t recommend regular flour or even whole wheat—it will make the brownies more cakey and airy, which isn’t what you want here.

  • Cocoa Powder: Using both types of cocoa powder really enhances the layers of flavor in these brownies. However, if you don’t have the special dark cocoa powder, you can use all regular unsweetened cocoa powder. It’ll still bring the chocolatey goodness you crave!

  • Brown Sugar: I prefer dark brown sugar for its rich toffee-like flavor that pairs beautifully with the amber notes of agave, cocoa powders, and semi-sweet chocolate chips. If you don’t have dark brown sugar, light brown sugar will work too, though it’ll be a bit lighter in flavor (still delicious, though!).

  • Agave Syrup: This natural sweetener adds a beautiful amber, vanilla-like flavor that pairs wonderfully with the deep cocoa. If you don’t have it on hand, you can easily swap in honey or maple syrup for a similarly natural, healthier alternative.

  • Olive Oil: Olive oil is my go-to for a natural, heart-healthy fat that’s also full of beneficial antioxidants. If you prefer, you can swap in avocado oil, which works wonderfully in this recipe and adds heart-healthy benefits too. You need the right fats in this recipe and to absorb more of those nutrients packed into your range of ingredients you whip up in these brownies.

  • Chocolate Chips: I love using mini semi-sweet chocolate chips in this recipe because they melt into little pockets of gooey chocolate throughout the brownies. They add to the texture without the higher fat and sugar content of milk chocolate chips. You can also use regular-sized dark chocolate chips, semi-sweet chips, or even sugar-free versions for a lighter option.

How to Serve These Brownies

These brownies are perfect on their own, but they’re even better when paired with any of the following:

  • Ice cream, frozen yogurt, or Greek yogurt

  • Fresh berries (blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, etc.)

  • Cherry sauce, jams, or jellies

  • Roasted and chopped nuts

  • Light whipped cream, fresh bananas... and the list goes on!

How to Save These Brownies

  • Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container or bag for 3-5 days.

  • Freezer: For longer storage, freeze in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months.

How to Make These Gooey Chocolate Brownies

Step 1: Prep the Oven & Pan

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper. Set aside.

Step 2: Mash the Avocado

Cut the avocado in half, remove and discard the pit, and scoop the flesh into a small bowl. Mash with a fork until smooth and as lump-free as you can get it. Set aside.

Step 3: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, add all of the dry ingredients: almond flour, oat flour, brown sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, special dark cocoa powder, baking powder, and sea salt. Stir together using a wooden spoon or whisk until evenly combined. Set aside.

Step 4: Whisk the Wet Ingredients

In a medium bowl, add (most) of the wet ingredients: agave syrup, olive oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Whisk until fully combined and smooth.

Step 5: Combine Everything

Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients and add the mashed avocado. Stir using a large wooden spoon or spatula until mostly combined. At this point, fold in about half of the mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, reserving the rest for topping. Mix just until combined—do not overmix.

Step 6: Assemble the Brownies

Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spoon or spatula. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips evenly over the top.

Step 7: Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 8: Cool & Serve

Remove from the oven and allow the brownies to cool slightly before lifting them from the pan and transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Serve slightly warm, plain, or topped with frozen yogurt, fruit, or anything you love.

Enjoy this delicious, healthier dessert that tastes just as good as it sounds!
