My little sister and I absolutely love cranberry sauce. I’ve always worked on creating a healthier version that is still amazing and enjoyable, allowing the natural health benefits of the orange juice and cranberries to shine through without excess sugar masking all that goodness. This is the least refined version I've tested that still delivers the right flavor, perfect consistency, and that classic sauce taste everyone loves. Welcome to Flour & Pots, and I hope you enjoy this recipe and make it a ton!
Ingredients
Frozen or fresh whole cranberries
Maple syrup
Turbinado sugar (add more if you prefer extra sweetness)
Orange juice (freshly squeezed preferred)
Vanilla extract
How to Make This Cranberry Sauce
Step #1 - Combine: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add all the ingredients: cranberries, maple syrup, turbinado sugar, orange juice, and vanilla extract.
Step #2 - Simmer & Pop: Cook for 8 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries start popping and breaking apart.
Step #3 - Thicken: Turn the heat down to low and simmer for another 3 to 5 minutes to let the sauce finish thickening up.
Step #4 - Cool & Serve: Remove from the heat and transfer the sauce to a glass jar or serve it right out of the pan. Let it cool slightly to allow it to thicken further before enjoying!
Ingredient Tips for This Sauce
The Orange Juice: Use fresh Cara Cara oranges for the sweetest, naturally vibrant fresh-squeezed juice.
Juice Swaps: If you don't have orange juice and want a naturally sweeter sauce, try swapping in 100% apple juice.
Cranberries: Fresh or frozen cranberries work identically, though fresh berries may cook just a little faster.
Sugar Alternatives: Turbinado sugar is a less refined, more whole sugar option. You can easily swap it for coconut sugar or use extra maple syrup to keep the recipe more unrefined.
Vanilla: Vanilla bean paste is my absolute favorite here for those gorgeous specks, but any 100% pure vanilla extract works wonderfully.
Nutrition & Recipe Health Benefits
Dietary Fiber: Whole cranberries are rich in insoluble fiber, which supports healthy digestion, promotes gut regularity, and keeps you feeling satisfied.
Lower Sugar Profile: Unlike traditional store-bought canned sauces packed with high-fructose corn syrup, this recipe relies primarily on pure maple syrup and a touch of unrefined sugar for a lower-glycemic treat that won't cause heavy blood sugar spikes or take away from the recipe nutrients.
Vitamin C & Immune Support: Fresh orange juice and cranberries deliver a powerful boost of Vitamin C, a vital antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress and supports immune function - so great!
Polyphenol Antioxidants: Cranberries are loaded with bioactive plant compounds (like proanthocyanidins) which promote heart health, reduce inflammation, and help maintain urinary tract health for better overall health benefits.
Manganese & Minerals: Cranberries provide essential minerals like manganese, which plays a key role in bone development, metabolism, and antioxidant enzyme systems in the body.
What is your favorite savory dish to pair with homemade cranberry sauce during the holidays?!
