Is This Book Clean?
Yes! This book is designed to be romantic, adventurous, and thrilling—without unnecessary language, excessive sexual content, or gory, graphic imagery. I loved how the story stayed true to its all-reader-friendly nature from the first page to the last.
Everyone has different standards, but this book does a great job of making readers feel comfortable while still fully immersed in an exciting and meaningful story. It allows the reader to dive into content that is mentally positive and uplifting, rather than material that tears down instead of builds up.
Yes, there is some kissing, light emotional arousal through a charming love story, and moments of passionate connection between the two main characters. However, these moments are mild, staying true to the author’s standards and intentions.
Is It a Quick Read?
Yes—and no. At 400 pages, this book is a moderate-length read. The font is larger, which helps, but it still takes some time to get through. Additionally, since The Traitor’s Game is part of a trilogy, you do need to be willing to commit to multiple books to experience the full story.
That being said, once you truly get into it, you’ll fly through the chapters. The high engagement factor, well-developed plot, and strong characters make it hard to put down. It really comes down to your reading speed, experience level, and personal pace—so don’t let the page count or series factor stop you from reading this book on your own timeline. It’s a really great book and absolutely worth it.
What Good Values Does This Book Have?
Trust Is Earned
I loved how the relationship between Kestra and Simon shows that trust must be earned through honesty and openness. Their connection—and many of Kestra’s other relationships—are tested by secrets, dishonesty, and broken trust. This is very applicable to real life: if you want trust, you must earn it through communication, straightforward honesty, and commitment. The Power of Honesty
Just as trust is earned, honesty is the foundation of strong relationships and meaningful change. When honesty becomes part of one’s character, it leads to progress, motivation, and resolution. This theme is portrayed beautifully throughout book one, and you can clearly see how honesty drives positive change—not just for the main characters, but for others around them as well.Fighting for the Good
While some may argue that good and evil are subjective, this book presents a clear contrast between what builds and what destroys, what strengthens and what weakens. These principles are woven throughout the story. When people come together to fight against visible evil and stand for the good, it builds individuals, communities, and even entire nations. The story emphasizes choosing what benefits everyone over selfish ambition and corrupted leadership, which adds depth and meaning to the narrative.
Book Summary / Overview
Kestra is a Dallisor—a member of a prominent family serving under the all-powerful Lord Endrick and his Ironheart armies. After being brutally kidnapped by rebels, she has spent the last three years in exile. Now, she is being pulled back into the dangerous political world of her family, where her father and Lord Endrick’s dark plans continue to grow, threatening control over their entire country and beyond their borders.
When Kristian is “kidnapped” once again, Kestra is blackmailed into finding the Olden Blade—the one weapon believed to be capable of killing Lord Endrick and freeing the land from his powerful dark control. To do so, she must betray her family and risk being exiled from the only life she has ever known.
As one of the rebel kidnappers, Simon, begins to form a connection with Kestra, both of them start questioning who—and what—they are really fighting for. Hidden motives, secrets, and shifting perspectives complicate their paths as they work toward the downfall of Lord Endrick.
Between loyalty, love, and position, what will they choose? And can they win?
The Good
Strong Story Development & Plot
The events throughout the story are cohesive, intentional, and thoughtfully crafted, creating a fast-moving plot that works chapter by chapter. Characters are introduced at the right time and with enough depth to form meaningful connections with the reader. The story is never superficial; instead, it is built on rich character development, clear backstories, and descriptive imagery that pulls you into a tense, mysterious, and well-paced adventure—perfectly setting up the next book in the series.
Unique & Creative
The Traitor’s Game offers a fresh take on fantasy, featuring strong, distinctive characters, unique settings, fictional lands, and real emotional struggles. I love books that transport you to new worlds while still grounding the story in realistic emotions and challenges—and this book does exactly that. It feels original, well thought out, and complete, without leaving you wishing for better ideas or stronger story concepts.
Keeps You on Edge
This is the kind of story that makes you eager to find out what happens next. Jennifer A. Nielsen builds tension through close calls, emotional heartbreak, and moments of tenderness that reflect real human struggles. Conflict builds upon conflict, keeping you on edge all the way to the final pages and leading seamlessly into book two.
Unseen Story Twists
Unexpected reveals and evolving character details add depth and realism to the story. These twists are introduced at the right moments, keeping the plot suspenseful while still feeling earned and believable. The author does a great job balancing surprise with clarity.
My Downside(s)
Characters Can Be Frustrating
Some of the main characters have very strong personalities, which can be frustrating at times. They make decisions you wish they would reconsider. This is both a pro and a con—it shows that the author created realistic, passionate characters, but their stubbornness can occasionally be overwhelming where you wish they would think before they act.
Some Story Elements You Root Against
Because of the many twists and bold character decisions, there are moments where readers may find themselves rooting against certain outcomes. While this can feel like a step backward in the story at times, it ultimately adds tension and emotional depth, strengthening the overall plots conflict.
Between the Good & the Downsides
Overall, this is one of my favorite books. I love the clear battle between good and evil, the unique fictional world, the elements of magic, and the realistic human tension that leads to meaningful change. Trust is built through action, sacrifice feels real, and the stakes remain high throughout every part of the book. The story is engaging, heart-racing, and thrilling as you follow Kestra and Simon in their fight against Lord Endrick’s iron grip on their country and surrounding lands.
Why 4.4 Stars?
I gave The Traitor’s Game a 4.4-star rating because I genuinely love this book. I’ve read it multiple times, and each time I notice something new. Jennifer A. Nielsen’s writing is engaging, heartfelt, clean, and well organized. Her characters are layered, her fictional world feels real, and her storytelling pulls you in from page one straight into book two.
Key reasons for my rating include:
The emotional weight of sacrifice for the greater good
Strong family connections and community strength
A touch of magic that enhances—not overwhelms—the story
The theme that people are stronger when they stand together
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, I truly enjoyed The Traitor’s Game. While the characters can be stubborn and occasionally frustrating, that only strengthens the emotional pull and realism of the story. The internal struggle of choosing between love, loyalty, and sacrifice makes this book deeply engaging. It kept me invested from beginning to end—and immediately sent me into book two, which I also recommend (and will be doing a separate post on soon).
